Men's Basketball Ready For Home Opener

Utica, NY – The Utica College men's basketball team plays its home opener against SUNY Poly on Tuesday (November 22nd). The Pioneers will look to win their first game of the season in front of the home crowd with the tip-off scheduled for 4 p.m.

Last Time Out: Utica (0-3) played its last game against Goucher College (1-2) to close out the Medaille College Tournament on November 19th... Utica lost the game by one point with the final score being 67-66... Justin Mayers (Hastings, NY/Hastings on the Hudson) attempted, but missed a potential game winning jump shot with just seconds on the clock... Ivan Iton (Ossining, NY/Ossining) led the Pioneers, as he tied his career-high of 24 points and added eight rebounds... Iton was selected as a member of the All-Tournament team after averaging 18 points and 7.5 rebounds over the weekend.
 
Team Leaders: Three games into the season Ivan Iton (Ossining, NY/Ossining) is Utica's leading scorer and rebounder... Iton averages 17.7 points, which ranks him eighth in the Empire 8 in scoring, and 7.3 rebounds per game which ranks sixth in the Empire 8... Bennito Ayarza (Brooklyn, NY/Cayuga Community College) leads the Pioneers in assists with 5.3 a game, which ranks third in the conference and leads the team in playing time as he plays 34 minutes per game... Ayarza is also second in the Empire 8 in steals per game, as he averages two a game.

Contributing Freshmen: Multiple freshmen have contributed early on this season... Freshman Hunter Remley (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) came off the bench and scored 10 points in his collegiate debut against Morrisville (November 15th)... Remley is currently averaging 6.7 points per game and received his first career start against Goucher College (November 19th)... Tyler Jollie (Marlboro, NY/Marlboro) also made his collegiate debut against Morrisville and recorded seven points in the game... Jollie knocked down two three-pointers in the game and was given his first career start in the team's matchup against Medaille (November 18th)... Kyler Mower (Richfield Springs, NY/Richfield Springs) made his collegiate debut against Medaille (November 18th) as he scored five points and blocked two shots... Mower is currently averaging five points per game coming off the bench for the Pioneers.

Scouting SUNY Poly: SUNY Poly is currently sitting at a record of 0-1 following their season opening loss to St. John Fisher... SUNY Poly gave up 100 points in the game losing by a score of 100-75... The team had lots of foul trouble as all five starters finished with four personal fouls and two bench players fouled out in the game... SUNY Poly shot just over 50% from the free throw line going 20-37... The team was led by Peyton Griffiths as he scored 25 points on the day... Teammates Quayshaun Mitchell and Kevin Williams both recorded 17 points and seven rebounds.
 
Against SUNY Poly: Utica College has defeated SUNY Poly in two straight matchups... In last year's contest the Pioneers won with the final score being 79-72... Graduate Jawan Simmons (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) led the team as he scored 17 points and snagged 12 rebounds earning a double-double... Carl Taylor (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) did a little bit of everything as he scored 13 points, grabbed three boards and added five assists in the game... SUNY Poly's Quayshaun Mitchell recorded a double-double in the game tallying 18 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Scouting Montclair: Montclair St. University currently holds a record of 0-2... Montclair lost a double overtime thriller to Brooklyn College in itsseason opener 99-98... Most recently, Montclair fell to The City College of New York by a score of 85-64... Jovanni Chatham was the only member of the team to score in double digits as he recorded 12 points in the game... Chatham scored all his points from behind the three-point arc, going 4-5 from three-point territory... Jordan Roberson was the team's leading rebounder in the game grabbing four offensive boards and tallied a total of six... Montclair's leading scorer is Brandon Channer as he currently is averaging 21.5 points two games into the season.

Looking Ahead: As the season creeps into the month of December the Pioneers will host Misericorida University on December 2nd... The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
