Womens Basketball Falls at Misericordia

DALLAS, PA- Misericordia University pulled away in the first quarter and never looked back as it downed the Utica College women's basketball team 79-47 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. 
 
The Pioneers (2-4) look to rebound Monday as they travel to Schenectady, NY to take on Union College.  Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
 
The first seven minutes of the contest proved to be a back and forth battle until Misericordia went on a 10-0 run in the final 2:50 of the first quarter to take a 24-15 lead after ten full minutes of action.
 
The Cougars extended their lead to as many as 13 points, 28-15, at the 8:32 mark of the second quarter before Ashley Mayo (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) and Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) knocked down consecutive 3-pointers to bring UC to within seven, 28-21, at the 7:23 marker. The home team then outscored the Pioneers 20-8 in the final seven minutes of the first half to take a 48-29 lead into the locker room.
 
Misericordia led 53-36 midway through the third quarter and extended that lead to 67-40 by the end of the third after a 14-4 run in the final 5:46 of the quarter. The Cougars held Utica to just seven fourth quarter points on their way to the convincing victory.
 
Two players scored in the double-digits for Utica, led by junior Ashley Mayo (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) who totaled 14 points, while freshman Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) finished with a career-high 13 points.  Junior Ashelyne Babb (Lynn, MA/Winthrop) led the Pioneers with six rebounds, all off the defensive glass.  Babb also had a team-high two steals and two assists, while chipping in with eight points of her own. 
 
Justine Seely led the Wildcats with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Rachel Carmody added 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Jaclyn Hajec also chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds for the Cougars.
 
Misericordia's 23 offensive rebounds led to 25 second chance points on the afternoon.  The Cougars also received 29 points from their bench and controlled play in the paint, outscoring UC 36-14 around the rim.
