POTSDAM, NY – The Utica College men's lacrosse team fell to SUNY Potsdam on the road 18-9 in non-conference action on Saturday … UC fell to 0-3 to start the season while the Bears improved to 2-1.
Seven different players scored for Utica while four players recorded at least one assist. Senior
Alex Finnegan (Bay Shore, NY/Islip) led the Pioneers with four points off of one goal and three assists while freshman
Dominic Castiglia (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) had three points off of one goal and two assists. Junior
Matthew Miller (Geneva, NY/Geneva) and sophomore
Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) each led the team with two goals apiece.
Patrick Mulligan (Commack, NY/Commack),
Brandon Souza (Watervliet, NY/Shaker), and
Xavier Perron (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Le Triolet) each added one goal while
Liam Wheatley (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder) and
Brickman House (Oneida, WI/Pulaski) added an assist apiece.
Matt Moran (six points off of three goals and three assists) and Ed Doherty (five points off of two goals and three assists) led the Bears while Berkley Stone added three points off of three goals.
SUNY Potsdam outshot UC 50-29 and had the advantage in the shots on goal category at 29-21. The teams were about even in the turnover department with Utica turning over the ball 19 times while the Bears gave up possession 20 times.
Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) had 10 saves and gave up 15 goals in 45:00 of action while
Parker Smith (Dexter, NY/General Brown) had one save and three goals against in 15:00 of action. Pete Gropp had 12 saves and gave up nine goals for the Bears in 56:50 of play while Jack Bezek had no saves and no goals against in 3:10 of play.
The game was 2-1 after the first quarter before Potsdam scored the first four goals of the second quarter and outscored Utica 6-4 making the game 8-5. The third quarter is when the Bears pulled away from UC outscoring the Pioneers 7-1 to make the score 15-6. The teams were even in the fourth quarter each scoring three goals in the final quarter.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday as they host their first home game of the season against SUNY Poly. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
