AUBURNDALE, FL – The Utica College baseball team took on Bowdoin College on Tuesday in a two-game matchup. The Pioneers lost the first game by a close margin of 5-3 while losing the second game of the day 8-1. UC is now 0-4 on the season while Bowdoin improves to 2-0. Utica takes on the University of Minnesota Morris on Wednesday in a single game matchup that starts at 2 p.m.
Utica 3, Bowdoin 5-Game One Final JT Ross (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) led the Pioneers at the plate reaching base three times in the game. He scored one run and had one RBI while drawing a walk and hitting a single and a double in the game.
Bowdoin got on the board in the first inning when Chad Martin hit a single to centerfield scoring Peter Cimini to take a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers would take a 2-1 lead in the third when Ross hit a double scoring
Jake Ryan (Kingston, NY/Kingston) and
Matthew DeMartino (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) singled scoring Ross.
After the third inning it was all Bowdoin as the team scored two runs in the fourth inning to make it 3-2, a run off of a homerun in the fifth inning to make it 4-2, and an insurance run in the sixth inning. UC's rally come up short in the seventh as DeMartino hit into a fielders choice that scored
Adam Pexton (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) to make it 5-3. That would be the only run that would cross the plate for the Pioneers that inning as Kyle Stanley of Bowdoin who got the save shut down the rally.
Harry Ridge won his first game of the season as he pitched 5.2 innings and struck out eight.
William Winsman (Palatine Bridge, NY/Canajoharie) pitched five innings for the Pioneers and struck out six while
Gavin McCann (Highland, NY/Highland) pitched one inning in relief.
Utica 1, Bowdoin 8-Game Two FinalThe Pioneers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Brandon Thomas (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) hit an RBI double driving in
Jake Ryan (Kingston, NY/Kingston). UC held the lead until the fifth inning.
Bowdoin capitalized on a two-run error and a sacrifice fly by Peter Cimini that scored Brandon Lope to take a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. Bowdoin added five runs in the sixth to take complete control of the game.
Michael Stae won his first game of the season while pitching all seven innings and striking out four.
Ed Zakrzewski (Rome, NY/Rome Catholic) got the start for the Pioneers and pitched five innings striking out six and giving up three unearned runs.
Gavin McCann (Highland, NY/Highland),
Jarred Luczak (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), and
Dom Caccioppoli (Circleville, NY/Pine Bush ) all saw action for Utica in the final two innings.
