Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Plunkett Leads Women's Lacrosse to Overtime Victory at Potsdam

POTSDAM, NY- Junior Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) netted the game-winner with just nine seconds remaining in the first overtime period as the Utica College women's lacrosse team downed host SUNY Potsdam 8-7 in overtime Saturday afternoon.

After a Potsdam shot hit the post, the Pioneers brought it down the field and set up in the offensive zone with 25 seconds remaining.  Plunkett was able to get around her defender and fired a shot through the legs of Potsdam goalie Devan Olschewske for the winner.  Plunkett finished with five goals on the day.

The teams traded goals throughout the game, with Potsdam holding a 6-5 lead at halftime.  Utica responded to outscore the Bears 2-1 in the second half.  Senior Courtney Wheeler (Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy) tied the game at 7 with 18:56 remaining.  It appeared that the Pioneers scored the go-ahead with 7:09 remaining as freshman Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) found the back of the net with a man advantage, however the goal was called back due to an illegal stick.

Sophomore Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) finished with one goal and two assists, while Wheeler and Sara Hennessey (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) also scored.  Senior Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) made nine saves in the win, while Olschewske had 13 saves as the Bears dropped their second game of the season.

The Pioneers, who improve to 3-2 on the year, return to action Tuesday as they host Oswego State.  Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
