Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

UC's Comeback Bid Falls Short at Oswego

Oswego, NY – The Utica College men's lacrosse team rallied and outscored host Oswego 5-2 in the final 30 minutes of action but could not complete the comeback as the Pioneers fell to the host Lakers, 10-9, in non-conference action on Wednesday.  UC has now lost two of its last three games by just one goal.  Brickman House (Oneida, WI/Pulaski) continued his strong play as he led UC with three goals and one assist, while Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) added two goals and two assists.  Freshman phenom Dominic Castiglia (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) added three goals and leads the Pioneers with 13 goals this season.

Utica senior Alex Finnegan (Bay Shore, NY/Islip) chipped in with three assists and now has a team-best 21 total points. The Pioneers' record fell to 1-7 overall on the year headed into Saturday's Empire 8 Conference match up at Houghton College (1 p.m.).  Oswego's record moved to 3-5.

The Lakers jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the first 8:55 of the contest behind two goals from Tyler Nason.  UC's first goal of the game came at the 9:22 ledger of the first quarter from the stick of Brickman House (Oneida, WI/Pulaski), his seventh tally of the year.

Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) and Dominic Castiglia (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) each added a goal before the end of the first to make it a two goal contest, 5-3.

Oswego added three of the four goals in the second quarter to take an 8-4 lead into the intermission. House netted his second goal of the afternoon at the 8:17 marker of the second quarter.

Utica began its comeback in the third quarter, as Castiglia made it an 8-5 game just 1:09 into the second half. Oswego answered with two of the game's next three goals to earn a 10-6 advantage with 21 seconds left on the third quarter clock.

The Pioneers dominated play in the fourth, netting three goals in a span of 3:52 late in the contest to make it a 10-9 game with 3:28 left in regulation.  Castiglia, House and Brandon Tracz (Oswego, NY/Oswego) each recorded a goal in the late Pioneer push and all three tallies were assisted by Alex Finnegan (Bay Shore, NY/Islip).  The goal by Tracz was his first of the season.

In the final moments of the contest, the Pioneers had a chance to knot the score at 10-10, but their game-tying bid sailed wide and Oswego kept the ball in bounds, picked up the ground ball and ran out the game clock.

UC goalie Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) stopped 11 shots in the loss.  His 11 saves helped to move him into third place on the College's all-time saves list as he surpassed Bruce Wright '04 and now has 444 for his career.

Rusty Dessert (Islip, NY/Islip) picked up a team-high six ground balls and caused two turnovers for Utica, while Tyler Nicolaus (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) added four ground balls, one assist and two caused turnovers. John Hanlon (Coconut Creek, FL/St. John Paul Academy) went 3-for-6 and picked up one ground balls at the faceoff X. Nick Yelich (Lancaster, NY/Depew) also added an assist for Utica.

Jarrod Wilkom netted a team-best three goals for Oswego, while James Lennon chipped in with two goals and two assists. Tyler Nason also totaled two goals for the Lakers.
