Men's Lacrosse Travels to Hamilton for Sixth Annual Contineer Cup

UTICA, NY – The Utica College men's lacrosse team travels across town to Hamilton College for the sixth annual Contineer Cup on Wednesday.  The rivalry game was named the "Contineer Cup" in 2011 and the Continentals have retained the cup in five consecutive meetings. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
 
Last Time Out: The Pioneers dropped their season opener against St. Lawrence 12-4 on Sunday at SUNY Potsdam … The Saints took an early lead at the 13:25 mark and ended the first quarter up 4-0 … SLU added four second quarter goals and ended the first half on top 7-0 … The Pioneers scored two goals in the third while St. Lawrence tallied four third quarter goals making it 11-2 after 45:00 … UC outscored the Saints 2-1 in the fourth quarter, but the game was in hand for St. Lawrence.
 
Young Offense: All four of the Pioneers' goals on Saturday were scored by either a sophomore or a freshman … Sophomore Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) picked up where he left off last year netting two goals while fellow sophomore Nick Yelich (Lancaster, NY/Depew) had one goal and one assist … Freshman Dominic Castiglia (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) also hit the back of the net for his first collegiate goal.
 
Senior Guidance: Seniors Liam Wheatley (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder) and Alex Finnegan (Bay Shore, NY/Islip) both had an assist in the season opener and provided veteran leadership on offense, while seniors Matt Werkmeister (Chaska, MN/Chaska) and Aric Freischlag (Wilson, NY/Wilson) started on defense.
 
In The Net: Senior Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) had 15 saves on 46 shots faced and allowed 12 goals in the season opener … He currently has a .556 save percentage … DiOrio is currently second in the Empire 8 Conference in saves per game (15.00) and is ninth in the conference in save percentage.
 
Scouting Hamilton: The Continentals are 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the NESCAC this season … Hamilton beat Colby 11-10 in its season opener on Saturday, March 5th … The Continentals are led by Sam Sweet (seven points off of three goals and four assists) and Joe Ricciuti (three points off of three goals) … In the net for Hamilton is John Schisler (16 saves, .615 save percentage, and a goals against average of 10.00).
 
Against Hamilton: The last victory that Utica had over Hamilton was a 10-8 win back in 2001 … Last year UC lost to the Continentals 11-6 at Charles A. Gaetano stadium.
