Late Goals Lift Utica Over Skidmore in Women's Lacrosse Action

UTICA, NY- Freshman Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) netted the go-ahead goal with two minutes remaining as the Utica College women's lacrosse team downed visiting Skidmore College, 13-11, in non-conference action Wednesday evening.

Utica (2-1), winner of its last two, looks to carry its momentum into Saturday as it travels to Clarkson University.  Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Thoroughbreds drop to 1-2 on the season and look to rebound next Tuesday as they take on Westfield State University (4 p.m.)

Skidmore went up 5-3 in the first 20 minutes of action before the Pioneers rallied to even the score 6-6 headed into halftime.  After back-and-fourth play in the second half, Utica was finally able to pull ahead in the final minutes of regulation.  Just 28 seconds after Scarpinella's go-ahead tally, senior Courtney Wheeler (Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy) sealed the victory with her seventh of the season.  Wheeler gathered a ball 25 yards out, sprinted past the Skidmore defense, and fired a high shot into the upper right hand corner.

Scarpinella and Wheeler each finished with a team-high four goals, while Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) had three.  Mary Stuhlman (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) also found the back of the net once each.  Junior Amanda Chruscicki (Utica, NY/Whitesboro) tallied her first assist of the season, while Plunkett also dished out one helper.

Senior Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) finished with eight saves in the win, while Megan Kolopsky totaled nine stops in the loss.  Skidmore's Tyler Phillips led all players with six goals on the day.
