ONEONTA, NY – The Utica College baseball team fell 13-12 in walk-off fashion against Oneonta in non-conference action on Tuesday. UC is now 4-17 overall with a 4-8 conference record. The Red Dragons improve to 6-22 overall with a 3-9 SUNYAC record. The Pioneers return to action Tuesday as they face cross-town rival SUNY Poly for a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
Alex Rocci (Utica, NY/Notre Dame) got the start for Utica and went three innings giving up six hits and eight earned runs while striking out one.
Dom Caccioppoli (Circleville, NY/Pine Bush ) went four innings giving up two hits and one earned run.
Vincent Burillo (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central ) went 1.2 innings giving up five hits and four runs (three earned).
JT Ross (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) led the offense going 4-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Dan Shelton got the start for Oneonta and went one inning giving up four hits and four earned runs. Matthew DePalmo went four innings giving up eight hits and three earned runs. Zach Zimardo (2.1 innings, four hits, and five earned runs) and Ryan Lyman (1.2 innings and two hits allowed) closed out the game for the Red Dragons. Jack Burns led the offense with three hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
Utica started the scoring out in the top half of the first inning when Ross singled home
Jake Ryan (Kingston, NY/Kingston) and Burillo hit home Ross. In the bottom half of the first the Red Dragons would turn a 2-0 deficit into a two run lead scoring four runs. Utica would battle back tallying two runs in the second and two runs in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. Oneonta would regain the lead in the home half of the fourth with a four run burst to make it 8-6. Ryan would hit a sacrifice fly to score
Brandon Thomas (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) in the fifth to make it 8-7. The Red Dragons would get that run back in the sixth to make it 9-7. The Pioneers would score five runs in the eighth inning to stretch the lead to 12-9. The Red Dragons would load the bases with one out before Utica got the second out on a fly ball to right field. With two outs Oneonta would hit three straight singles to tie the game at 12. The game would end on an error by the second baseman that allowed the winning run to cross the plate.
