UTICA, NY- The Utica College men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker Saturday night as it fell to visiting SUNY Maritime, 2-1 in overtime. Senior captain
Owen Gillam (Bristol, CT/Bristol) scored the lone goal for UC.
The Privateers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 22
nd minute as Matt Smith fired a long free kick from just passed midfield. The ball hit off a Utica defender and bounced over the head of Utica keeper
Matthew Milograno (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) to break the deadlock.
The Pioneers evened the score in the 65
th minute as Gillam rifled a shot from 45 yards out that hit off the cross bar and went straight down, landing behind the goal line. Gilliam's tally was his first of the year.
Despite each team trading opportunities over the next 25 minutes, neither was able to get the go-ahead, forcing the extra frame. Maritime controlled most of the play in the overtime period and capitalized on a corner kick just over two minutes into extra time. The service by Nicholas Ciacca bounced around in the box before Harry Colucci was able to direct it to the far post, where Matthew Pavek punched it home to give the Privateers their third win of the season.
Milograno finished with five saves in net, while Michael Rodriguez turned aside eight shots for Maritime.
The Pioneers return to action Sunday as they take on Baruch College (11:30 a.m.). Maritime will face Skidmore College in the final game of the UC invitational on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
