Center Valley, PA – The DeSales University women's soccer team scored five first half goals on its way to a convincing 7-0 victory over visiting Utica College on Saturday afternoon.
Utica (0-4) will be in search of its first win of the season on Wednesday when the Pioneers travel to nearby SUNY Poly to take on the Wildcats at 7 p.m. Utica freshman goalie
Allison Wagner (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) stopped four shots on the afternoon, while
Kimberly Beattie (Levitton, NY/Division Ave) made one save in net for the Pioneers.
Senior Jess Wetherhold had two goals and an assist leading six different Bulldogs who found the back of the net on Saturday. Wetherhold opened the scoring tallying her first goal of the year, unassisted 11:24 into the game. The Bulldogs (4-1) then exploded for four goals in a span of 4:32 to take a 5-0 lead, essentially putting the game away.
Junior Gabby Lucchese started the string with her first of the year on assists from Wetherhold and freshman Meghan Williams. Junior Angelica Bertola netted her eighth of the year just 1:27 later on an assist from Lucchese. Williams then scored her first of the season on assists from Lucchese and Bertola and junior Kelly Riley finished off the scoring barrage with her first career goal on a free kick strike just above the box.
Wetherhold added her second of the game 11:44 into the second-half and junior Rachel Logue finished off the scoring just 51 seconds later on a header off a corner kick from freshman Sydney Amato.
Senior Emily Hoats, sophomore Haley Jacobs, and junior Shannon Pennella each saw action in goal for DeSales to record the combined shutout, the third blanking of the year for the team.
