Volleyball Drops a Pair on Day One at 32nd Annual Cortland Classic

CORTLAND, NY – The Utica College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of contests on the opening day at the 32nd annual Cortland Red Dragon Volleyball Classic on Friday night.  The Pioneers faultered in the opening game of the tournament against Fredonia, 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-17).  UC picked up a first set victory in game two against Wells, but eventually fell 3-1 (16-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-12).

The Pioneers (1-2) return to action on Saturday when they take on Misericordia at 11a.m. and Buffalo State at 4 p.m.

Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) posted a team-best 19 kills over the course of two contests, while Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) did a little bit of everything and recorded 17 assists and 16 kills.  Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) added six blocks for Utica over the two game span. 

Herringshaw led the way for the Pioneers against Fredonia with eight kills, three blocks and two aces, while Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) added six kills and one assist.  Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) posted six kills and seven assists, while Megan Weiss (Windsor, CT/Northwest Catholic) also added seven assists of her own.  Monique Fletcher (Waterford, CT/Norwich Free Academy) (8), Marissa Faroni (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) (5) and Andreana Kroup (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) (4) combined for 17 digs in game one.

The Pioneers dominated the first set in game two, taking down the Express 25-16, via 14 kills and a .333 team hitting percentage.  However, Wells fought back with three set victories in a row to earn the win.  Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) registered a team-high 13 kills, while Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) added 10 kills and 10 assists.  Lindsey Hannel (Victor, NY/Victor) added four assists and Allison Della Penna (Batavia, NY/Batavia) posted a team-best four kills.  Megan Weiss (Windsor, CT/Northwest Catholic) also posted ten assists for the Pioneers, while Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) came away with three blocks.  Leah Octave (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall) picked up a team-best 17 digs for the Pioneers.
