Volleyball Falls on Day Two of Red Dragon Classic

CORTLAND, NY- The Utica College volleyball team dropped its final two games of the Red Dragon Classic, hosted by SUNY Cortland, falling 3-0 to both Misericordia and Buffalo State on Saturday.

Utica battled the Cougars closely in the first two sets (25-19, 25-20), before Misericordia was able to wear down the Pioneers in the third set (25-14).  Senior Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) led the Pioneers with six kills, while sophomores Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) and Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) each added four kills.
 
Voss had team-highs in aces (two) and digs (five) and also added seven assists on the day. Sophomore Leah Octave (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall) chipped in with five digs, and freshman Megan Weiss (Windsor, CT/Northwest Catholic) had 10 assists.  Freshman Paige Klock (Herkimer, NY/Herkimer) made an impact in the one set that she played, totaling two blocks to match Herringshaw's effort.
 
Utica 0, Buffalo State 3- Game Two Final
Once against the Pioneers put up a fight in the first two sets, falling by identical 25-20 scores, before the Bengals were able to pull away in the third set (25-13).  Utica matched up with Buff State in three statistical categories, as the two teams had nearly identical marks in digs (48-49), assists (17-16), and blocks (5-5).  The Bengals used 13 service aces and 32 kills to win their first game of the season.
 
This time it was Voss who led the attack with six kills, while Blaszak (five) and Herringshaw (four) were right behind her.  Andreana Kroup (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) had an impressive showing as she led the team with three aces and added 10 digs, while Leah Octave (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall) had a career-high 17 digs on the day.  Weiss once again tallied 10 assists and Klock and Herringshaw led the way at the net with two blocks each.
 
Octave was named to the All-Tournament team as she totaled 39 digs in three games. 
 
The Pioneers (1-4) return to action Wednesday as they take on local rival, SUNY Poly. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
