Utica Sweeps Host Cobleskill, 3-0

Cobleskill, N.Y. -- The Utica College women's volleyball team swept host SUNY Cobleskill 3-0 in non-conference action at the Iorio Gymnasium on Wednesday evening by set scores of 25-8, 25-12 and 25-21. The Pioneers improved to 5-13 overall on the season while Cobleskill fell to 6-10 overall on the year.

The Pioneers earned a convincing first set victory by a lopsided 25-7 tally. The Fighting Tigers jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the second set before the visitors wrestled control away from the home team to post the win. The third set saw Cobleskill once again jump out to an early 3-1 advantage before being outscored 12-4 in the middle of the contest giving the Pioneers a 13-5 lead from which they never looked back.

Utica sophomore setter Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) was the key to the Pioneers win boasting an impressive all-around performance that featured: 27 assists, three kills, four service aces and a pair of digs. Senior middle hitter Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) was also a factor for the Pioneers with a team-high 10 kills and five total blocks on the evening. Monique Fletcher (Waterford, CT/Norwich Free Academy) added seven kills, while Leah Octave (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall) posted 13 digs. 

The Fighting Tigers were led by sophomore middle hitter Emilie Reimer who had a team-high of 10 kills to go with two service aces and by freshman outside hitter Rachel Sherman had 10 digs and two service aces on the night.

Utica College will return to the court over the weekend when it hosts the 2016 Utica College Tournament hosted at the Harold T. Clack Athletic Center beginning on Friday, September 30th against SUNY Farmingdale at 2:00 p.m. and SUNY Potsdam at 6:00 p.m.
