UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's soccer team netted two goals in the second half, but it was not enough as visiting SUNY Potsdam held on for a 5-2 victory in non-conference action Wednesday evening. Junior
Keri Berkowitz (Racine, WI/Racine Saint Catherine's) led the way with one goal and one assist for UC.
After falling down 4-0 in the first half, the Pioneers mounted a comeback in the 52
nd minute as Berkowitz netted her first of the year, assisted by
Ciara McIlvenny (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington). Berkowitz took the feed from McIlvenny, ran down the right flank, and fired a long shot into the far side of the net for the Pioneers' first tally.
Just under eight minutes later, Berkowitz sent in a corner kick that missed the head of a Utica player in the box, but sophomore
Abby Reilly (Brookfield, NY/Brookfield) was waiting 20 yards out and drove in a rocket just under the cross bar to bring UC within two.
Despite sustained pressure for most of the second half, the Pioneers were unable to score a third tally. Potsdam capped off the scoring in the 79
th minute to put the game out of reach.
Utica's
Jamie Enders (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) totaled five saves in the first half, before freshman
Allison Wagner (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) came on in relief to make four stops. Potsdam's Bri Thibeau made two saves in the win.
Utica will hit the road Saturday as it travels to DeSales University for a match up against the Bulldogs. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
