Women's Hockey Drops Close One to #1 Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, NY- The nationally ranked No. 1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals scored three unanswered goals, including an empty netter with 1:15 to play as it downed the Utica College women's hockey team 3-1 in ECAC West Conference action Sunday afternoon.

After a scoreless first period, the Pioneers got on the board at 1:12 of the second period as junior Taylor Osowski (Highlands Ranch, CO/Colorado Selects) netted her fifth of the year.  Senior Jane Pagano (Erie, PA/Tabor Academy) gathered the puck in the defensive zone and skated down the ice, dodging Cardinal attackers.  Just over the Plattsburgh blue line, Pagano dropped the puck to Osowski, who's first shot was saved, but she buried the rebound to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

Plattsburgh evened the score at 14:08 of the second period as Kayla Meneghin found the back of the net for her 13th of the year, assisted by Erin Brand and Muna Fadel.

Utica nearly scored the go-ahead early in the third period as sophomore Danielle Haasbeek (Grand Forks, ND/Balmoral Hall) hit the post, with the Cardinals countering the other way as Meneghin netted her second of the day to give Plattsburgh the lead.

Despite sustained pressure by the Pioneers, they were unable to get the equalizer and an empty netter by the home team sealed the victory.

Senior Keira Goin (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Hotchkiss School) had a solid outing in goal, stopping 36 shots, while Camille Leonard had 14 saves in the win.

The Pioneers fall to 9-7 overall, while the Cardinals improve to 16-1.  Utica looks to bounce back next weekend as it takes on ECAC West Conference rival, Elmira College in a home-and-home series.  Puck drop on Saturday is at 2:30 p.m. at the Utica Memorial Auditorium while Sunday's faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Elmira.
