Utica, NY – The Utica College women's tennis team will be on the road Tuesday. The Pioneers will face Sage for an Empire 8 matchup, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Last Time Out: In the team's last match, UC fell to E8 opponent Stevens by a score of 8-1. It was the Pioneers' last home contest of the season, with the loss dropping their record to 3-7 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
Lulu Zhang (Wenzhou, China/Newcomers) earned the lone point for the team, winning the third singles matchup 7-6, 6-4.
Final Match: Tuesday's meeting with the Sage Gators will be the last match of the 2017 season for the Pioneers. As the team closes out the year, multiple members of the team will be closing out there collegiate careers as well.
Shannon Fillmore (Somerset, NJ/Franklin),
Monica Johnson (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), and
Lulu Zhang (Wenzhou, China/Newcomers) will all be competing in their last tennis match as a Pioneer. UC currently has three wins on the season, matching its total from last year with a chance to beat 2016's three-win mark.
Scouting Sage: The Gators are currently boasting an overall record of 8-3 and are 3-3 in E8 competition. The team lost its last match, 8-1, to Empire 8 competitor Nazareth College. Shanice Mendoza came away with a singles flight win, to score the only point of the day for the Gators. Sage has currently lost two out of its last three matches, both losses coming to members of the Empire 8 (Nazareth and Stevens).
Against Sage: Last year the Pioneers lost to Sage by a score of 6-3 at home.
Lulu Zhang (Wenzhou, China/Newcomers) and
Sara Gribanoff (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) earned wins in singles competition, to earn two points for the team. In doubles play, Zhang was able to contribute to a 9-7 win in the third flight. This will be the first time Utica and Sage have faced off against one another, since Sage's entrance into the Empire 8.
