UTICA, NY – The Utica College men's soccer team jumped out to a 3-0 first half lead and never looked back as the Pioneers snapped a three game slide with a 4-1 victory at home over visiting SUNY Canton on Tuesday night. Utica's
Julian Fonseca (Rocky Hill, CT/Bridgton) led the way with a career-high five points to increase his team-leading point total to 16 (three goals, 10 assists) this season. Fonseca needs just two more helpers to tie the program's single season assist record of 12 originally set by Roberto Sgueglia (2010) and Evan Dufault (2007).
Utica's record improved to 6-7 overall headed into a key Empire 8 Conference matchup at home on Saturday against Elmira College (3 p.m.). Canton's record dropped to 4-6-1 overall. Utica now holds a 3-1 series advantage over the Roo's dating back to 2014.
Patrick Hynes (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem) chipped in with a career-high two points for the Pioneers. Hynes and Fonseca connected with
Alex Purcell (Lansing, NY/Lansing) on the Pioneers' first goal of the contest in the 10
th minute to hand the home team an early 1-0 lead. Purcell netted his fourth goal of the season and is now tied for the team-lead with
Thomas Muller (Camillus, NY/Bishop Ludden).
Hynes got back to work at 36:48 when he headed home his second goal of the season off assists from
Paul Mitchell (Belfast, Ireland/CBS) and
Eric Emmons (Constantia, NY/Bishop Ludden). Mitchell and Emmons were each credited with their first collegiate assists to give Utica a 2-0 advantage.
Just before the half, Fonseca netted his first of the night off an assist from
Zackery Caporale (Clermont, FL/South Lake) to push the Pioneers to a 3-0 lead in the first 45 minutes of action.
Fonseca padded the Pioneer lead with a rocket from 20 yards out at the 55:21 marker to put the home team on top 4-0.
Canton's Nick Magliano broke up the shutout when he netted his third goal of the season at 68:02 to close out the scoring on the afternoon.
Utica outshot the Roo's 15-7 and also earned a 7-2 corner kick advantage.
Jonathan Side (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) stopped four shots to earn his third victory of the season. His goals against average through nine starts is now 1.44.
Canton's Connor Campbell made four saves in the loss.
