Utica, NY – The Utica College men's swim and dive team will host Roberts Wesleyan and Wells College for its first home meet of the season. Events are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Utica College Pool.
Last Time Out: The Pioneers went 1-2 at the Hartwick Quad Meet in their last appearance. The team lost to Hartwick (215-53) and Saint Rose (177-75), but picked up the victory over Cazenovia (154-4).
TJ Tellekamp (Oakdale, NY/Connetquot) clocked a finishing time of 49.72 in the 100-yard freestyle event on his way to placing first. Tellekamp,
Daniel Angotti (Auburn, NY/Southern Cayuga),
Keihin Lee (New Bremen, NY/Beaver River), and
Aaron Gudrian (Windsor, CT/Windsor) came in third in the 200-yard medley relay.
Time Off: UC is coming off of a two-week rest period from the last time they competed in an official meet. Last year, when Utica hosted its home-opener after two weeks without a meet, the team defeated Cazenovia 77-59 and broke a school record. Graduates Sam Bensin, Tommy Carlson, and Chris Halsey joined
Aaron Gudrian (Windsor, CT/Windsor) in recording a new Utica pool record time of 7:56.26 in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The Pioneers earned six first place finishes at that meet, and it will be interesting to see if having the extra time between contests has the same effect this year.
Roberts Wesleyan: This is the first season ever for the Roberts Wesleyan swim program and it will be competing in its second-ever meet at the Utica College Pool on Saturday. The Red Hawks last competed at the GCC Harvest Invitational, hosted by Genesee Community College. The team came in third place at the invitational out of five competing teams. In the 200-yard freestyle relay event, the Roberts Wesleyan squad placed third with a time of 2:02.11. With a time of 4:55.37, the relay team for Roberts came in third again in the 200-yard medley relay race.
Wells: The men's swim and dive team at Wells College has competed in two meets this season. At the Cortland Pumpkin Relays, the Express placed fifth at the meet as a team. Up next, Wells College hosted SUNY Oswego for a dual meet. Oswego defeated Wells by a score of 59-29. The team had multiple second place finishes, but the headline was Caleb Evans. Evans swam the 10th-fastest time in school history in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.74) and recording the eighth-best time in program history for the 200-yard backstroke (2:32.39).
Looking Ahead: The Pioneers will be at home again for their next meet on November 10th, as they will face Herkimer County Community College and Cazenovia. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
