Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Comes Up Short in Florida Thursday

KISSIMMEE, FL- The Utica College softball team had its winning streak snapped Thursday as it dropped both contests at the Rebel Spring Games, losing to Loras College 12-3 and Wisconsin Lutheran 9-7.

Utica 3, Loras College 12 (6 Innings)- Game One Final
The Duhawks jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first two innings and never looked back as they improved to 5-0 on the year.  The Pioneers finally got on the board in the third inning as Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) hit a two-RBI double to left center that scored Samantha Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) and Sadie Evans (Clifton Park New York/Shenendehowa).

Utica added another run in the fourth inning as freshman Madison Akots (Wynantskill, NY/Emma Willard School) singled through the right side to score Kassidy Ogren (Albany, NY/Colonie Central).  It was too littl, too late however, as Loras went on to earn a run rule victory.

Ogren led UC going 2-for-2 at the plate, while Akots and Jacqueline Aronin (Naugatuck, Connecticut/Naugatuck High School) were each 1-for-2.  Rice finished 1-for-3 at the dish with a team-best two RBIs.

Shannon Cool (Herkimer, NY/Herkimer), Alyssa Samborin (Schenectady, New York/Mohonasen), and Emily O'Herien (Oneida, New York/Oneida) each saw time pitching, with Cool shouldering the loss.

Utica 7, Wisconsin Lutheran 9- Game Two Final
Errors proved costly for Utica in the second game of the day as the Warriors scored six unearned runs off three errors in the first inning.

Facing a 9-5 deficit in the bottom of the seventh, Utica rallied to score two runs to bring the game within two.  With two outs and the tying run at the plate, Wisconsin Lutheran was able to get Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) to ground out for the final out.

Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) was 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Jacqueline Aronin (Naugatuck, Connecticut/Naugatuck High School) was 3-for-5.  Freshmen Madison Akots (Wynantskill, NY/Emma Willard School) and Sadie Evans (Clifton Park New York/Shenendehowa) each had two hits and Stransky, Kassidy Ogren (Albany, NY/Colonie Central), and Samantha Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) had one hit apiece.

Stransky and Brittany Meka (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) combined for six strikeouts and allowed just two earned runs total in the game.

Utica wraps up its week in Florida on Friday as the Pioneers take on Case Western Reserve (11:15 a.m.) and Albright College (1:30 p.m.).
