SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY- Skidmore University used a nine-goal first half to down Utica College 15-6 in women's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon.
Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) and
Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) each scored twice in the loss.
Skidmore jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of play before Plunkett was able to get UC on the board with 10:34 remaining in the half. The home team went on to score five more goals before halftime to take a commanding 9-2 lead into the locker room. Freshman
Rachel Gelina (Westfield, MA/Westfield) netted her first collegiate goal off a feed from
Noelle Capriglione (New Milford, CT/New Milford ) for Utica's second tally of the day.
The Pioneers battled back in the second half, but it was too little, too late as the Thoroughbreds went on to win their second game of the season. Scarpinella scored both her goals in the second half, while
Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) tallied one goal and one assist and Plunkett netted her second of the day.
Sara Hennessey (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) and
Tewasherake Barnes (Akwesasne, NY/Salmon River) each had one assist.
Hali Vandermeulen (Walden, NY/Valley Central) and
Amanda Lupo (Auburn, NY/Skaneateles) combined for ten saves in net for Utica, while Megan Kolopsky and Caroline Kenlon totaled 13 saves for Skidmore.
Utica (1-1) looks to rebound Friday as it hosts Clarkson University. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
