Women's Lacrosse Suffers First Conference Loss to #12 Ithaca

UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's lacrosse team had its five-game winning streak snapped Wednesday as it fell to nationally ranked No. 12 Ithaca College, 17-6. The loss was also Utica's first conference loss of the season.
 
The Bombers scored three goals in the first 3:09 of action before the Pioneers were able to respond with a pair of goals of their own.  Ithaca pulled away in the middle of the first half scoring eight straight goals in ten minutes to take a commanding 11-2 lead. 
 
The Pioneers held the Bombers to just five goals in the second half and netted three goals in the final 30 minutes, but it was not enough as Ithaca picked up its fifth conference win of the year.
 
Senior Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) led the Pioneers with four points, on three goals and one assist.  Classmate Sara Hennessey (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) had a team-high two assists, while Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville), and Tewasherake Barnes (Akwesasne, NY/Salmon River) each had one goal. Hailee DuMont (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin) and Noelle Capriglione (New Milford, CT/New Milford ) chipped in with one assist apiece.
 
Plunkett had a team-leading four draw controls, while Maggie Notter (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) recorded two caused turnovers.  Scarpinella, meanwhile, scooped up a game-high six ground balls. 
 
Utica goalies Emily Holtshouser (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) and Hali Vandermeulen (Walden, NY/Valley Central) combined for 11 saves in net, while their counterparts, Kimberly Presuto and Emily Ross totaled nine saves in the win.
 
The Pioneers (6-4, 3-1 Empire 8) return to action Saturday as they travel to Stevens Institute of Technology.  Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
