Softball Splits with RPI in Non-Conference Play

UTICA, NY- The Utica College softball team split with visiting RPI Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action, taking game one 2-0, before falling in game two 5-0.
 
Utica 2, RPI 0- Game One Final
The Pioneers scored both runs in the third inning and was rock solid defensively as it came away with a 2-0 victory in game one.
 
First, sophomore Hayley Fredericks (Suffern, NY/Suffern) singled up the middle to drive in Jamie Miller (Boonville, NY/Adirondack).  Then, with the bases loaded and just one out, Kassidy Ogren (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) flied out down the right field line that scored Jacqueline Aronin (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck High School).
 
That was all the Pioneers needed as Brittany Meka (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) was lights out in the circle.  Meka, who had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning, gave up just two hits and struck out four in the shutout victory.
 
Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Aronin, Ogren, Miller, Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place), Samantha Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich), Dominique Soto (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place), and Kimberly Beattie (Levitton, NY/Division Ave) each had one hit.
 
Utica 0, RPI 5- Game Two Final
The Pioneers trailed just 1-0 heading into the final inning until the Engineers pulled away with four runs in the top of the seventh to cruise to their 20th win of the year.
 
Utica mustered just three hits in game two, one each off the bats of Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), Hayley Fredericks (Suffern, NY/Suffern), and Kassidy Ogren (Albany, NY/Colonie Central).
 
Brittany Meka (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) fanned two in 6.1 innings of work, while Alyssa Samborin (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) did not allow a hit while getting the final two outs.
 
The Pioneers (15-19) return to action Friday as they travel across town to face local rival, SUNY Poly.  Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
