Utica, NY – The Utica College women's tennis team will be hosting its first competition of the season on Wednesday. The Pioneers face off against Oswego State, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Last Time Out: UC lost to Hartwick (4-0, 2-0 E8) in its last matchup, making its record now 0-2 overall and in conference play.
Lulu Zhang (Wenzhou, China/Newcomers),
Shannon Fillmore (Somerset, NJ/Franklin), and
Deanna DiFabio (Oneida, NY/Oneida) all earned wins in singles competition. Zhang and teammate
Julianne Pieros (Alpha, NJ/Phillipsburg) worked together to come away with the team's only doubles victory, as the Pioneers fell by a final score of 5-4.
Zhang Doing her Thang: Lulu Zhang (Wenzhou, China/Newcomers) continues her streak, as she now has won six singles matches in a row, dating back to the end of last season. She has currently won 10 out of her last 11 singles matchups, including last year, and has earned the victory in three consecutive doubles matches. Zhang has yet to lose in either singles or doubles competition this season making her 4-0 overall individually.
Scouting Oswego: The Lakers are currently sitting at an overall record of 1-1 to start the season. They fell to SUNY Geneseo 0-9 in the season opener before defeating Elmira 5-4 in their second contest. Oswego rallied in the final three singles matches as Bridget Bender, Haru Kobayashi, and Erin Vargo all won their flights to clinch a win for the team.
Against Oswego: Last season when Utica met up against Oswego, the Lakers came away with the 9-0 win at home. The Pioneers will be looking for their first win over Oswego State in over ten years.
Looking Ahead: The next contest for UC is scheduled for Saturday, when it hosts Empire 8 opponent Alfred (0-4, 0-3 E8). The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
