OSWEGO, NY- The Utica College volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 straight-set victory over Hilbert College in the opening game of the Oswego Tournament Friday evening.
The Pioneers took sets one and two by a combined score of 50-19, before the Hawks battled back in the third set. The teams traded leads in set three before Utica was able to seal the deal with a 27-25 score as the Pioneers picked up their second win of the season.
Junior
Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) led UC with eight kills, while classmate
Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) had six kills and freshman
Meaghan Romaguera (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout) had four kills. Voss also added a team-high five service aces, while Herringshaw had three aces and
Abigail Mosenthin (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) chipped in with two aces.
Defensively, Herringshaw led the squad with three blocks and
Allison Della Penna (Batavia, NY/Batavia) and
Miranda Stockbridge (Waterville, NY/Waterville) registered two blocks apiece. Voss collected a team-leading 12 digs, followed by
Marissa Faroni (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) (nine) and
Jessica Macheda (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) (six). Faroni also aided the offense with 12 assists, while Macheda and
Briana Toledo (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) combined for 10 assists.
The Pioneers wrap up the weekend on Saturday as they face host Oswego State (11 a.m.) and Bard College (1 p.m.)
