Delhi, NY – The Utica College women's tennis team faced SUNY Delhi on Wednesday, coming away with the 7-2 victory. The Pioneers improved their record to 2-4 overall this season.
In doubles competition Utica earned two of three match points, winning the second and third flight.
Julianne Pieros (Alpha, NJ/Phillipsburg) and
Lulu Zhang (Wenzhou, China/Newcomers) won the second singles match, 8-3. In third singles,
Christa Pham (Utica, NY/T.R. Proctor) and
Bianca Bockhaus (Shenorock, NY/Somers) earned the 8-1 victory.
Sara Gribanoff (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) set the tone for singles play as she won in the first flight 6-3, 6-3. Zhang defeated Delhi's Antonia Delavera in the third singles match 6-3, 6-1. Teammate
Shannon Fillmore (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) won her matchup after going to a third set, defeating Reika Kumasaki.
Christa Pham (Utica, NY/T.R. Proctor) and
Bianca Bockhaus (Shenorock, NY/Somers) both earned wins in their singles appearances as well. UC finished singles play with five out of the possible six match points on the day.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Saturday for an Empire 8 contest against Houghton. The match will be played at Houghton and is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
