Utica, NY – The Utica College women's tennis team will be at home on Wednesday for an Empire 8 matchup with St. John Fisher. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
Last Time Out: In UC's last appearance, the team lost on the road to Houghton, 8-1. The Pioneers' record dropped to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the E8. The lone point for Utica was scored by
Julianne Pieros (Alpha, NJ/Phillipsburg) and
Lulu Zhang (Wenzhou, China/Newcomers) in the second doubles flight, winning by a score of 8-7 after the tiebreaker.
Strong Tag Team: The duo of
Lulu Zhang (Wenzhou, China/Newcomers) and
Julianne Pieros (Alpha, NJ/Phillipsburg) has been unstoppable so far this season for UC. Competing in six matches in the second doubles slot, this tag team has yet to lose together. Holding a doubles record of 6-0 so far this season, Zhang and Pieros have won their flight through the means of a tiebreaker twice. It will be exciting to see how long this duo can maintain its undefeated record.
Matching Up With Fisher: The Cardinals currently own a record of 5-1 overall and are 3-1 in conference play. The team is now on a two-match win streak, after defeating SUNY Cortland and Hartwick over the weekend. In Fisher's most recent 7-2 win over Empire 8 opponent Hartwick, the team dominated doubles play by winning all three flights. Last season the Pioneers were swept by Fisher, losing by a score of 9-0. UC will be looking for its first win against the Cardinals in over ten years.
Looking Ahead: UC will be back in action on Friday, as it will play host to SUNY Delhi. It will be the second meeting between these two teams, as it is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
