Utica, NY – The Utica College women's tennis team defeated SUNY Delhi on Friday, 8-1. The win snaps a two-match losing streak and improves the team's record to 3-6 overall.
In doubles play, the Pioneers took two of the possible points. SUNY Delhi stole the first doubles match by a score of 8-5. In the second doubles flight,
Lulu Zhang (Wenzhou, China/Newcomers) and
Julianne Pieros (Alpha, NJ/Phillipsburg) earned the 8-2 win. In the final doubles match of the day
Madeline McIlnay (York, PA/York Suburban) and
Bianca Bockhaus (Shenorock, NY/Somers) won the match point with an 8-3 finish.
UC swept its opponent in singles play, taking all six available points.
Sara Gribanoff (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) won the first singles match 6-4, 6-2. In the second singles flight
Julianne Pieros (Alpha, NJ/Phillipsburg) defeated Delhi's Saffiaya Muhammed 6-3, 4-2, as play was suspended due to darkness and rain before the second set was finished.
Lulu Zhang (Wenzhou, China/Newcomers) notched the win in third singles with set scores of 6-0, 6-2. Utica's
Shannon Fillmore (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) defeated Antonia Delevara in the fourth singles match 6-3, 6-2. Junior
Christa Pham (Utica, NY/T.R. Proctor) took home the 6-4, 6-4 win the fifth singles flight. In the sixth singles matchup,
Madeline McIlnay (York, PA/York Suburban) triumphed over Delhi's Mackenzie Landman 6-0, 6-1.
The Pioneers are back at home for the final home match of the 2017 season on Sunday. They will be hosting Empire 8 foe Stevens, starting at 12 p.m.
