MARCY, NY – The Utica College men's soccer team earned its second straight 1-0 victory on Sunday as the Pioneers topped host SUNY Cobleskill in non-conference action.
Salvatore Cabibbo (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester) registered his first collegiate goal as he headed home a direct kick from
Tucker Marvin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) 12:30 into the second half of play to help the Pioneers improve to 2-0 on the season.
Utica goalie
Jonathan Side (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh), a transfer from Tompkins Cortland Community College, made seven saves on the afternoon to earn his second straight shutout to open the season.
Alex Purcell (Lansing, NY/Lansing) and
Julian Fonseca (Rocky Hill, CT/Bridgton) each posted three shots for the Pioneers.
Utica put pressure on the Fighting Tigers (0-2) all afternoon, earning a 15-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Tucker, who most recently played at LeMoyne College, tallied his first assist in the blue and orange as he played a nice ball into Cabibbo who directed home the game winner early in the second half.
The Pioneers are set to host the Utica College Invitational next weekend as they welcome New Paltz, Cobleskill and New Rochelle for the four team, two day, tournament at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The weekend will open up on Saturday as New Paltz plays Cobleskill at 11 a.m., followed by Utica and New Rochelle at 1:30 p.m. The Pioneers will take on New Paltz Sunday morning at 11 a.m. before the tournament wraps up with Cobleskill versus New Rochelle at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
