Volleyball Picks up First Win Against Cobleskill

UTICA, NY- The Utica College volleyball team picked up its first win of the season Thursday night as it downed visiting SUNY Cobleskill 3-1 in non-conference action at the Harold T. Clark athletic center. 
 
After winning the first set 25-20, the Pioneers held a 23-15 advantage and were looking to seal the deal on set two, but the Fighting Tigers clawed their way back to come away with the 30-28 win to even the match at one set apiece. 
 
The teams traded points in the third set, before the Pioneers were finally able to gain control as they came away with a 25-22 win.  Trailing 18-14 in the fourth set, UC scored seven straight points to regain momentum before coming away with another 25-22 win to take the match 3-1.
 
Junior Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) was a force at the net as she totaled a team-high 14 kills and 11 blocks on the evening.  Classmate Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) was second on the squad with seven kills, followed by freshman Meaghan Romaguera (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout) with six.  Senior Abigail Mosenthin (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) had a season-high five aces, while Marissa Faroni (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and Jessica Macheda (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) combined for 28 assists.  
 
UC had four players tally at leadt 10 digs on the day, including Voss (14), Mosenthin (13), Kristen Clapp (Phoenix, NY/Phoenix) (12), and Faroni (11).
 
The Pioneers return to the court this weekend as they travel to the Rochester for the U of R Invitational.  The action kicks off Friday against the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford at 6 p.m.
