UTICA, NY - The Utica College women's soccer team seeks a fourth consecutive win as it hosts the Sage Colleges on Wednesday, October 3rd. Match time for the Empire 8 duel is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Where We Sit: Utica currently sits in second in the Empire 8 conference with a 2-0-1 league ledger, and are 5-3-2 overall. With five Empire 8 matches remaining, Utica would be in the conference tournament if the season ended today, but has plenty of work left to do to make their first postseason appearance since 2007 into a reality.
Last Time Out: Utica scored its second Empire 8 conference victory of the season in a 3-2 win at Houghton on Saturday. The offensive difference maker for Utica came in the form of the surging striker
Mikayla Blumenstock (Poland, NY/Poland), who scored all three goals for the Pioneers to net her first NCAA hat trick. Junior keeper
Allison Wagner (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) totaled four saves.
Put It On The Board: After her hat trick Saturday, the Pioneer offense is now led by Blumenstock's total of six goals for the season. The transfer student currently carries a three match goal scoring streak into the matchup with Sage and is second in the conference in goal scoring. Sophomore
Kierra Caissey (Gardner, MA/Gardner) has also impressed with five goals so far this season, and seven other players have also scored this year. Utica is now third in the Empire 8 conference in scoring average at an even two goals per match.
Ms. Clutch: Including two last week, Blumenstock already holds three game-winning goals for the campaign, which ties her for the third most for a single season in UC women's soccer history.
A September Summer Day: After well over a season working on the tremendous back line for the Pioneers, sophomore
Summer Gagnon (Manchester, NH/Manchester) finally got a chance to shine on offense with her first career goal in the 2-1 win over Cazenovia. The Pioneer rearguard used a firm stance at the front of the net to deposit Utica's only goal of regulation off a corner kick in the triumph.
Allie The Ace: Across Utica's five game unbeaten streak, Utica has not allowed more than two goals. The efforts of junior keeper
Allison Wagner (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) continue to go a long way towards helping the Pioneers prevail recently. Her total of 76 saves stands second in the Empire 8 conference, and needs just 61 more saves to tie Melissa Diana's mark for career saves, a feat she may achieve as early as this season under the right set of circumstances.
It's Not Going to Happen: In Utica's 2-1 overtime win over Cazenovia, the Pioneers held the highest scoring offense in all of Division III to a season-low one goal, and kept NCAA leading scorer Michaela Breeze completely off of the scoreboard.
On Wednesdays We Play Longer: Utica is currently undefeated in matches that have advanced to extra time this season. The Pioneers played a pair of 110 minute draws this season with Nazareth and Buffalo State, and
Mikayla Blumenstock (Poland, NY/Poland) scored in the first extra time session on Wednesday in the win over Cazenovia. All three matches to go over 90 minutes have been played on a Wednesday.
About the Gators: The Gators are 4-4-2, and are tied for sixth in the Empire 8 conference with a conference record of 0-1-1. They are paced by local product Joleen Marfone's four goals.
Who's Next: Utica will visit Hamilton on Sunday for a non-conference match. Opening kickoff on the grass at Love Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
