Utica, NY – The Utica College women's soccer team hosted Alfred University Saturday for an Empire 8 matchup on Senior Day.
Mikayla Blumenstock (Poland, NY/Poland) saved the day with a game-winning goal in the early goings of overtime to earn UC the 3-2 win.
Prior to the game the Pioneers honored the six seniors on the roster in a short Senior Day Ceremony.
Gabrielle Esposito (Rotterdam, NY/Mohonasen),
AnnaLisa MacPhee (Latham, NY/Shaker),
Abby Reilly (Brookfield, NY/Brookfield),
Brooke Catalano (West Islip, NY/West Islip),
Jenna Mazza (Frankfort, NY/Sauquoit Valley) and
Jessica Levy (Coram, NY/Longwood) were all recognized as members of the 2018 senior class.
As the game got underway, Blumenstock gave Utica an early 1-0 lead with the assisting coming from
Kierra Caissey (Gardner, MA/Gardner). Less than four minutes later Caissey registered a goal of her own, assisted by
Summer Gagnon (Manchester, NH/Manchester), to put the team up 2-0. Alfred would strike back before halftime, as an Emily Wright corner kick was deflected off a UC defender and into the net. The visiting Saxons trailed Utica 2-1 heading into the mid-game break.
Later in the second half the Saxons put continued pressure on the Pioneer defenders, drawing five corner kicks in the period. Once again Emily Wright stepped up to serve in a corner kick and this time found the back of the net on her own. With less than 10 minutes in regulation the score was at a 2-2 tie. After 90 minutes the game went to extra time, marking the fifth overtime game of the season for UC.
Just 1:16 into the first period of extra time,
Gabrielle Esposito (Rotterdam, NY/Mohonasen) played a through-ball behind Alfred's defenders for
Mikayla Blumenstock (Poland, NY/Poland) to run onto. Blumenstock received the pass, attacked the net, and beat the keeper for the game-winner. She has now scored nine goals this season, including four-game winners (2 in OT).
UC goalkeeper
Emily Hill (Watertown, CT/Watertown) is now 2-0 in her first two collegiate starts, making six saves in the victory. The Pioneers improve to 7-5-2 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play as the regular season begins to wind down.
Alfred drops to 7-6 overall and 2-4 in Empire 8 contests after the road loss. Goalie Makenzie Cashmer made four saves for the Saxons.
