Volleyball Drops Pair at MIT Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, MA- The Utica College volleyball team dropped a pair of games on the final day of the MIT Invitational Saturday as it fell to MIT and Kings College, both by 3-0 scores.

Utica 0, MIT 3- Game One Final
The Pioneers jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first set, but the nationally ranked No. 21 MIT Engineers responded to score seven of the next eight points to take the lead.  After each team traded the next 10 points, MIT scored the final 11 points to win set one 25-11.  The Engineers went on to take set two 25-14, and held off a Pioneer comeback in set three to win 25-23.

Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) led UC with seven kills, while Meaghan Romaguera (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout) had five kills and Rosemarie Fesko (Goshen, NY/Central) chipped in with two.  Marissa Faroni (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) aided the offense with 11 assists, while Casey Sims (Schenectady, NY/Niskayuna) and Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) combined for eight assists.

Voss led the Utica defense with 13 digs, followed by Romaguera (six) and Megan Rice (Leverett, MA/Amherst Regional), who had four digs.  Both Herringshaw and Sims each tallied one block in the loss.

Utica 0, Kings 3- Game Two Final
Once again the Pioneers fell down 2-0 but made things interesting in the third set as they battled back to tie the set at 24-24.  It turned out to be too little, too late, however as Kings scored the next two points to hold on for a straight-set win.

Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) and Miranda Stockbridge (Waterville, NY/Waterville) each had five kills, while Meaghan Romaguera (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout) had three kills.  Marissa Faroni (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) had a team-high 16 assists and Briana Guentner (Oswego, NY/Oswego) led the squad with two service aces.

Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) had 12 digs on the day and she now ranks third all-time with 1,173 career digs.  For her efforts, Voss was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Pioneers return to action Monday as they travel to SUNY-Delhi.  Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
