UTICA, NY- The Utica College volleyball team dropped a close one, 3-1, to visiting SUNY Poly in non-conference action Thursday evening at the Clark Athletic Center. The Pioneers lost by just eight points combined over the three sets.
After dropping the first set 26-24, the Pioneers battled back to take set two 25-22. SUNY Poly responded, however to win set three 25-22. Utica jumped out to a 6-2 lead in set four and later led 14-12, but the Wildcats regained control and came away with the 25-22 win in set four to take the match.
Senior
Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) totaled a game-high 27 digs to lead the way for Utica. Voss now has 1,214 digs in her career to move into second place all-time.
Meaghan Romaguera (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout) and
Marissa Faroni (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) combined for 20 digs on the evening.
Senior
Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) led all players with a season-high 21 kills and she also added a team-best four blocks in the loss. Romaguera chipped in offensively with seven kills and two service aces, while
Miranda Stockbridge (Waterville, NY/Waterville) had six kills.
Faroni led the Pioneers with 22 assists on the evening, while
Jenna Prewasnicak (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) had 15 helpers.
The Pioneers look to bounce back on Saturday as they host Hartwick College (11 a.m.) and Alfred University (4 p.m.) in an Empire 8 pod. The Alfred game will also serve as Utica's senior game.
