Potsdam, NY – The Utica College women's basketball team began its season Tuesday night on the road against SUNY Potsdam. The Pioneers had four players reach double figures, as they defeated the Bears 60-43 to start the season 1-0.
Brigid Johndrow (Bristol, CT/St. Paul Catholic) recorded 13 points, six assists, and three steals to lead the way. Johndrow shot 3-for-6 from beyond the arc in the contest.
Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) and
Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) both finished with 13 points as well. Forward
Briannah Florian (Fort Plain, NY/Fort Plain) was 5-for-6 at the free throw line, posting 11 points and eight rebounds in the victory.
UC entered halftime trailing Potsdam, 28-24, but was able to take it up a notch throughout the second half. The Pioneers held the Bears to single digit scoring in both the third and the fourth quarter. Utica outscored its opponent 36-15 in the second half of play, as the strong defensive effort paved the way for the 17-point win.
Potsdam was led by Naya Walters' 13 point, 11 rebound double-double, as she went 6-for-6 from the field. Teammate Devyn Elliott finished with 10 points and seven boards in the loss. The Bears are now 0-2 to start the year.
The Pioneers are back on the court this weekend for another non-conference road contest, as they are set to battle Wells College on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
