Fast Start Guides Women's Basketball to Win Over Alfred State

UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's basketball team picked up its second straight victory in a 71-52 win over visiting Alfred State University in non-conference action on Miga Court at the Clark Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Pioneers improved to 4-2 overall and will return to the hardwood on Saturday when they host local rival SUNY Poly at 2 p.m. Alfred State's record moved to 3-6 overall.
 
Utica jumped out to a convincing 18-3 lead in the first 8:39 of the contest behind balanced scoring from six different players.  The Pioneers kept up the pressure in the second quarter to take a 39-22 lead into halftime. 
 
Freshman Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) was on double-double watch early as she had 13 points and seven rebounds through the first 20 minutes.  Przygoda finished the day with 17 points and 15 boards, marking her third double-double of the season and her fifth straight game with at least 10 rebounds. 
 
Sophomore Brigid Johndrow (Bristol, CT/St. Paul Catholic) was right behind Przygoda with 16 points, including 2-of-4 from behind the three-point line, while Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) totaled 12 points and chipped in with eight rebounds. 
 
Senior Briannah Florian (Fort Plain, NY/Fort Plain) finished second on the squad with 11 boards and she also added eight points to help out the offense.  Freshmen Petrina DeMarco (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and Cora Sawyer (New London, CT/New London) combined for 10 points in the win, and Kimberly Soriano (Queens, NY/Monsignor McClancey Memorial) and Madison O'Hagan (Seaford, NY/Seaford) totaled five points and three points, respectively. 
 
Alfred State was led by Emily Kelley, who totaled 16 points and nine boards, while Rayanna Anderson had 13 points for the visitors.
