Utica Tops Alvernia 10-7

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 17, 2018) - Utica College scored two goals to end the second and two more to start the third for a 9-4 lead then held on for a 10-7 win over Alvernia University Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse action. Utica's Jake Bratek (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) led the way with five points on three goals and two assists for the Pioneers.
 
Utica has now won two in a row and moved its record to 2-2 overall on the season. The Pioneers return to action on the road Wednesday when they travel to Keuka College to take on the Wolf Pack at 4 p.m.

Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) added two goals for the Pioneers and leads the team with 11 goals this season. Senior Nick Yelich (Lancaster, NY/Depew) also posted two goals to add to his team-high 12 total points (five goals, seven assists) this season. Dylan Dunham (Elbridge, NY/Jordan Elbridge) tallied one goal and now has four goals in his last two games.

Ryan Boshart (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) stopped 28 shots to pick up his first collegiate victory. Tyler Giachinta (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane), Nick Alexander (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) and Matt Fedullo (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) each posted two caused turnovers. Gianchinta led the way with four ground balls, while Alex Velazquez (Brookhaven, NY/Longwood) picked up three ground balls.

The Pioneers held a 7-4 lead at the half behind goals from Nick Yelich (Lancaster, NY/Depew), Austin Forte (Central Square, NY/Central Square), Zach Duby (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt), Dylan Dunham (Elbridge, NY/Jordan Elbridge), Bratek (two) and Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic). Utica added the first two goals of the second half to take a 9-4 lead and Desveaux netted his second of the day in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for the Pioneers.
