Men’s Lacrosse Looks to Extend its Win Streak at Keuka Wednesday

UTICA, NY- The Utica College men's lacrosse team is in search of its third straight victory as the Pioneers travel to Keuka College to face the Wolves in a non-conference matchup Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Last Time Out: The Pioneers picked up back-to-back wins over Spring break, including their first win of the season against Marywood University last Thursday in the home opener at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. UC also defeated Alvernia University 10-7 on Saturday. Jake Bratek (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) led the team with five points (three goals and two assists).  Ryan Boshart (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) made his first collegiate start in goal where he picked up his first career win.

Yelich Leads the Offense: Senior attacker Nick Yelich (Lancaster, NY/Depew) continues to lead the team with 12 points (five goals and seven assists) this season. He currently ranks third in the Empire 8 Conference with 1.75 assists per game. Yelich helped the Pioneers win back-to-back games with two goals and three assists.

Desveaux Chasing 100: Senior attacker Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) needs just five more points to join the 100 point club. He scored a team-high of five goals against Marywood University and tacked on two more goals Saturday at Alvernia to cap off a seven point week. Desveaux currently has 95 career points with 75 goals and 20 assists in 51 games played. He now has a team-high 11 goals this season and ranks third in the Empire 8 with an average of 2.75 goals per game.

Boshart Named E8 Goalie of the Week: After making his first collegiate start in goal on Saturday, Ryan Boshart (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) was named Empire 8 men's lacrosse goalie of the week. Boshart picked up his first career win after allowing just seven goals and making a school-record 28 saves against Alvernia University.

Dunham Leads the Rookies: Freshman attacker Dylan Dunham (Elbridge, NY/Jordan Elbridge) continues to have an impressive start to his first season with the Pioneers. He has scored five points with four goals and one assist in his last two games played. Dunham has also picked up five ground balls this season and caused one turnover.

On the Defensive End: Junior midfielder Tyler Giachinta (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) currently leads the team with 11 ground balls. On Saturday, he picked up a team-high four ground balls and caused two turnovers in the win over Alvernia. Behind Giachinta, freshman defenseman Nick Alexander (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) is tied for second on the team with nine ground balls. Alexander, Jimmy Vienneau (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), Alex Velazquez (Brookhaven, NY/Longwood) and Zach Duby (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) all had three ground balls each on Saturday. Sophomore defenseman Matt Fedullo (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) is also tied with Giachinta and Alexander with two caused turnovers.

Solid Goaltending: All three goalkeepers for the Pioneers have played at least 15 minutes in the four games this season. Junior Harrison Bower (Northport, NY/Kings Park) is currently 1-2 this season with a 14.18 goals against average. He leads the Empire 8 Conference in saves per game (15.00) and is seventh with a save percentage of .536. Even though he has only played 15 minutes in a game, junior Brad Schulman (Airmont, NY/Suffern) is third in the Empire 8 with a goals against average of 4.00 and third in save percentage (.667). Freshman Ryan Boshart (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) has made one start in goal where he is 1-0 with 7.00 goals against average.

Scouting Keuka: The Wolves are 2-1 this season after defeating both Alfred State and Elmira, while losing to Brockport. They average 13.0 goals per game while allowing their opponents to score six goals per game. The Wolves are led by sophomore attacker Craig Gerhardt, who has 17 points with 10 goals and seven assists, and freshman midfielder Kasey Gallina who has 10 points (four goals and six assists). Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Mavretish is currently 1-1 in three starts with a 9.52 goals against average and a .526 save percentage.

Against Keuka: The Pioneers have faced Keuka seven times in their 18-year program history. UC is 5-2 all-time against the Wolves. Last year, the Pioneers defeated the Wolves 11-9 at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium where Jake Bratek (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) and Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) each scored two goals while John Hanlon (Coconut Creek, FL/St. John Paul Academy) scored one. UC also outshot the Wolves 44-24 and won 17 face-offs compared to Keuka's seven.

Looking Ahead: The Pioneers will travel to Houghton College for their first Empire 8 Conference game of the season on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
