Elmira Tops Utica in Empire 8 Play

CLINTON, NY – The Utica College baseball team jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the third inning but could not hold on as Elmira College tacked on eight runs in a four inning stretch midway through the contest and defeated the Pioneers 12-2 in Empire 8 play at Hamilton College on Friday afternoon.

Utica's Jake Ryan (Kingston, NY/Kingston) went 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI, while Christian Tiffin (Sherrill, NY/VVS) added two hits, one run scored and one walk to pace the Pioneers. UC's record moved to 7-7 overall and 1-3 in Empire 8 play.  Elmira captured its first win of the season and improved its record to 1-13 overall and 1-4 in E8 play.

Elmira pitcher Conor Bawiec went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored three times, while adding 8.0 innings of work on the mound to earn his first victory of the season. Bawiec struck out five and did not allow an earned run in the victory.  Tommy Fogarty went 1-for-3 with four RBIs on the afternoon to pace the Soaring Eagles.

Tom Carrigan (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck), Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame), Adam Nell (Vernon, NY/VVS) and Matthew Leviton (South River, NJ/South River) each posted one hit for the Pioneers on the afternoon.

Utica ace Griffin Baur (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) got the start for the Pioneers on the mound and struck out two in 5.1 innings of work.  Three of the nine runs credited to him were unearned as the Pioneers made three errors in the field.

Elmira took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Pioneers answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead.  Leviton scored on a throwing error by the Soaring Eagles, before Ryan singled home Tiffin to give Utica the 2-1 lead. 

Elmira added two runs in the fourth to take the lead back 3-2.  The visitors then scored seven runs in the next two innings to take a commanding 10-2 lead.

The Soaring Eagles tacked on two more runs to close out the contest as they earned the ten run victory. 

Utica returns to action against Elmira on Saturday at Hamilton College's Loop Road Field as the Pioneers host the Soaring Eagles for a conference doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.

Utica's Ryan Keefe (Ballston, NY/Ballston Spa) came on in relief and struck out two in 3.0 innings of work for the home team.
