Utica, NY – The Utica College men's tennis team will play its final two matches of the 2018 season this weekend. The Pioneers travel to face Stevens for a 2 p.m. start on Saturday, then they will return home Sunday to host SUNY Delhi at 12 p.m. to wrap up the year.
Last Time Out: UC lost to the Gators from Sage in its last match by a score of 7-2. In the third doubles flight
Joshua Palmer (Southington, CT/Wilcox Technical) and
Alfonzo Whitehurst (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) got their first win of the season, 8-4, to earn the team one match point.
Paul Litvak (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln) got the win in first singles as his opponent forfeited the match point after falling behind 3-0 in the first set. Palmer pushed Sage's Mitesh Joshi to a third set in the fifth singles slot, but came up short surrendering the match point to the Gators.
Senior Class: The three members of the 2018 senior class will finish out their careers this weekend as the season comes to a close.
Austyn Diller (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee),
Matthew McCoy (Sherrill, NY/Vernon Verona Sherrill), and
Alfonzo Whitehurst (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) will be with the team for one last weekend set as Pioneers.
Scouting Stevens: The Stevens Ducks are 11-9 overall and 6-0 against Empire 8 Conference foes this season. The Ducks are on a four-match winning streak after taking down Wilkes University in their last matchup. With an undefeated record within the E8, the team has yet to give up a single match point in conference play. Stevens plays Hartwick College in the morning prior to closing out Empire 8 competition against UC Saturday afternoon.
Scouting Delhi: The Broncos are 2-6 overall prior to facing Keystone College on Thursday. The team lost to Penn State Brandywine, 6-3, in its last time out after beating Sage, 6-3, in a previous matchup. Sunday's meeting between SUNY Delhi and Utica will be the final day of competition this spring for both schools.
With no more matches left on the schedule following the meeting with Delhi, the Pioneers' season will come to a close Sunday.
