Baseball Loses Both in Saturday's Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Hoboken, NJ – The Utica College baseball team faced Stevens on the road Saturday for a doubleheader to kick off the three-game series. The Ducks rode a big fourth inning to a 7-5 win in game one before cruising to a 23-10 win in game two.
 
Game 1:
 
Senior Adam Nell (Vernon, NY/VVS) stepped up to the plate in the top of the fourth inning, launching a home run out to right-center field for the first score of the game. Nell wasn't alone in this one, as teammate Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) connected for a two-run homer in the top of the seventh. Quinlan finished 2-for-4 with the home run, a double, and two RBI's.
 
Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame) recorded two RBI's in the contest, thanks to a single up the middle in the fifth inning that brought Tom Carrigan (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and Ryan Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) home. Palmer batted 3-for-4 in the game, scoring two runs while Carrigan went 2-for-3 in the loss.
 
Griffin Baur (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) (4-2) started on the hill and received the losing decision after 3.2 innings pitched. Brett Sarnowski (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) entered the game to pitch in the fourth and finished without giving up a single hit or run.
 
Stevens put together a seven-run inning in the fourth, as the team tallied all of its runs during that rally. Donny Gherardi was 2-for-4 at the dish with one run scored and a double. The first baseman Alex Detweiler was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while four other teammates also notched one RBI.
 
Charlie Ruegger (6-2) was on the mound for the Ducks, throwing for 6.1 innings to earn the win before being relieved. During his shift, Ruegger allowed 11 hits and struck out seven batters. Reliever Drew Hanke entered the game in the seventh to close it out, getting the final two outs of the game and earning his fourth save of the season.
 
Game 2:
 
The Ducks improved to 22-14 overall and 13-3 in E8 competition with the 23-10 win in game two of the doubleheader. Stevens scored nine runs in the third inning and six more in the fifth to jump out to a huge lead in the night cap.
 
Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) went yard again in the second contest, hitting a two-run shot in the top of the first inning. Jake Ryan (Kingston, NY/Kingston) went 3-for-5 at the plate with 2 RBI's, while Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame)'s single in the ninth inning tallied two RBI's. Tom Carrigan (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) finished the game 1-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI.
 
UC's starting pitcher Jake Cavanagh (Plainville, NY/King Phillip Regional) (1-2) took the loss on the mound after being pulled in the third inning. Eric Sahagian (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland), John Franchi (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), Michael Canino (Highland, NY/Highland), Ryan Keefe (Ballston, NY/Ballston Spa), Bryce Berie (Adams, NY/South Jefferson), and Taylor Hartman (Galway, NY/Galway) all spent time on the hill in game two.
 
Gannon Kenney-McGowan, Alex Detweiler, and Nathan Zuckerman all knocked the ball over the fence for Stevens in this one. Detweiler batted 3-for-6 with five runs scored and two RBI's, while Thomas Paulich was 3-for-5 with three RBI's. Patrick Rood's 2-for-4 effort at the plate tallied the team three more RBI's. Donny Gherardi finished 4-for-6 in the contest with two runs scored and two RBI's.
 
Michael Frissora (1-0) received the win, striking out the side in his one inning of action. Danny Poidomani started at pitcher and struck out nine UC batters in 4.1 innings pitched. Roy Iversen, Alex Smith, Ryan Larsen, and Eli Zuckerman all stepped to the rubber for Stevens in the win.
 
The Pioneers are now 12-15 overall and 4-10 in conference play heading into the final day of the series with Stevens. Sunday's contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
