HOBOKEN, NJ- The Utica College women's lacrosse team dropped its second straight Empire 8 Conference contest as it fell to E8 frontrunner and nationally ranked No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology, 16-8, on Saturday. Eight goals against is the most Stevens has given up to an Empire 8 opponent so far this season.
The Pioneers (6-5, 2-2 Empire 8) will look to rebound next Saturday as they host Houghton College. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Utica got on the board first as sophomore
Hailee DuMont (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin) netted her 11
th of the year at 26:05 to give the Pioneers the early 1-0 lead. The Ducks responded, however, with seven of the next eight goals to take a 7-2 lead with 12:42 remaining in the first half. Utica used goals by senior
Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and junior Noelle Caprilgione to make it 9-4, but Stevens added another tally with just 12 seconds remaining to head into halftime with a 10-4 lead.
The home team kept up the pressure in the second half, scoring four goals in the first ten minutes, however the Pioneers held strong and outscored the Ducks 3-2 over the final 20 minutes of play.
Freshman
Lauren Wolff (Peabody, MA/Peabody) led Utica with three points (two goals, one assist) on the day, while Miller and DuMont each had two scores. Freshman
Stephanie Husnay (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) also chipped in with a goal and an assist to stretch her scoring streak to nine games, while
Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) extended her streak to eight games.
Sophomore
Hali Vandermeulen (Walden, NY/Valley Central) made 13 saves in the loss, marking her fourth outing this season with over ten saves. Her counterpart, Stephanie Schnelzer, made 11 saves in the win.
DuMont and
Natalie Capriglione (New Milford, CT/New Milford) led the Pioneers with four draw controls each, and DuMont also had a team-high three caused turnovers. Wolff and DuMont shared the team-lead with two ground balls apiece.
