Men's Soccer Shuts Out D'Youville at Home

Utica, NY – The Utica College men's soccer team hosted D'Youville on Saturday for game two of the 2018 season. The Pioneers came away with a 2-0 shutout win, improving their record to 1-1 after the opening weekend.

In the 12th minute during the first half of play, Patrick Hynes (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem) scored his first goal of the season burying an opportunity in front of the net with the assist going to Julian Fonseca (Rocky Hill, CT/Bridgton). The Pioneers possessed the ball well throughout the half, outshooting the visiting Spartans 8-1. UC held a 1-0 lead as the game reached the halftime intermission.

D'Youville threatened to score multiple times throughout the second half, but the Utica defenders held strong and did not allow the Spartans to get off clean shots towards the net. Senior Julian Fonseca (Rocky Hill, CT/Bridgton) drew a foul inside the box, and was awarded a penalty kick opportunity for the second time in two games. Fonseca struck the back of the net on the shot for his second goal of the year, putting UC up 2-0 as the game came to a close.

Jonathan Side (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) earned the clean sheet on the day, making two saves along the way back in the net. Julian Fonseca (Rocky Hill, CT/Bridgton) finished the game with one goal and one assist, while Patrick Hynes (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem) also scored one goal.

D'Youville's goalkeeper, Kyle Dick finished with six saves in the team's first game of the year. The Spartans open the 2018 season with a record of 0-1.
