Women's Tennis to Face Alfred & Plattsburgh this Weekend

Utica, NY – The Utica College women's tennis team has two matches coming up this weekend. The Pioneers will travel to play Alfred University at 1 p.m., Saturday, and then they will return home for a 1 p.m. start time against Plattsburgh State on Sunday.

Last Time Out: In the team's last match, UC fell at home to SUNY Delhi, 5-4. Julianne Pieros (Alpha, NJ/Phillipsburg), Bianca Bockhaus (Shenorock, NY/Somers), and Elma Selimovic (Utica, NY/T.R. Proctor) all scored a point for Utica by receiving wins in singles play. However, the duo of Selimovic and Christa Pham (Utica, NY/T.R. Proctor) was the only pairing to win their doubles matchup on the day. The close loss puts the Pioneers record down to 0-3 so far this season.

Scouting Alfred: The Saxons are currently 3-2 overall and hold a 2-0 undefeated mark against Empire 8 opponents. Alfred looks to get back on track against Utica, as the team fell to Fredonia, 5-4, in its last match.

Last Year's Matchup: In the fall of 2017, UC defeated the Saxons from Alfred University, 5-4. In singles play, Julianne Pieros (Alpha, NJ/Phillipsburg) and teammate Shannon Fillmore (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) both pulled out victories to score Utica two match points. Pieros and Madeline McIlnay (York, PA/York Suburban) both contributed to wins in their separate doubles matches, as the Pioneers edged past Alfred.

Scouting Plattsburgh: The Plattsburgh Cardinals own a record of 4-2 heading into Sunday's meeting with Utica. Out of the four wins, two of them have come by way of a clean sweep. The team is 2-1 on the road thus far in 2018 and has an equal record of 2-1 at home.

Looking Ahead: The Pioneers will be back in action on Tuesday, as they are home once again to face Sage. This E8 contest is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
