OSWEGO, NY- The Utica College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to SUNY Canton in the opening game of the Oswego State Invitational Friday evening.
The Pioneers had a strong start in the first set and led 22-20 before the Roos were able to score five of the next six points to take a 1-0 lead after one set. Canton jumped out to a 9-6 lead in the second set and went on to win 25-18, before cruising to a 25-15 win in set three to earn the straight-set victory.
Senior
Nicole Herringshaw (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) led the Utica attack with 12 kills, marking her fourth game this season with at least 10 kills. Herringshaw also had a team-high two blocks, while
Miranda Stockbridge (Waterville, NY/Waterville) and
Monique Fletcher (Waterford, CT/Norwich Free Academy) each had one.
Meaghan Romaguera (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout) led the squad with three service aces, followed by
Marissa Faroni (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) with two, and
Jenna Prewasnicak (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) with one. Faroni also aided the offense with eight assists on the evening, while Prewasnicak and
Hannah Voss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) combined for seven assists.
Voss led the Utica defense with 17 digs, while Faroni tallied ten digs and Fletcher chipped in with three.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday as they take on St. Lawrence University (11 a.m.) and D'Youville College (1 p.m.).
