Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Tripped up by #14 Hamilton

UTICA, NY- The Utica College field hockey team had its winning streak snapped Tuesday evening as it fell to nationally ranked No. 14 Hamilton College 4-2 in non-conference action at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.  Senior Rylee Meelan (Clinton, NY/Clinton) led the Pioneers with three points on the evening.

The Continentals opened the scoring at 6:15 as Sarah Pierpont netted her second of the season off an assist by Sarah Stinebaugh to give Hamilton a 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers evened the score at 13:31 converting on their first penalty corner of the game.  Senior Rylee Meelan (Clinton, NY/Clinton) took the centering feed from Ricki Haab (Stowe, VT/Stowe) and fired a shot on net.  Hamilton goalie Julia Booth was able to stop the first shot, but Jenny Robbins (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) was there to put in the rebound for her first of the year.

The Continentals regained the lead at 28:40 as Stinebaugh netted her first of two on the day.  Michaela Giuttari tipped a ball in front that bounced right to Stinebaugh for the easy tap in.

It looked like the visitors were going to take a 2-1 lead into halftime, but Meelan had different plans as she chased down a long ball, deked Booth and placed a shot into the yawning cage for her team-leading ninth of the year.  With that tally, Meelan took sole possession of fifth place on the College's career goal scoring list with 34.

The Continentals turned up the pressure in the second half and were finally rewarded at 51:04 as Tatiana Bradley cleaned up a loose ball in front for her fifth of the year, assisted by Giuttari.  Hamilton added an insurance goal with just under four minutes remaining as Stinebaugh tallied her second of the day.

The Continentals outshot Utica 33-6 on the day and held an 18-2 advantage in penalty corners.  Freshman Megan Chamberlain (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) made a career-high 19 saves, including one on a penalty stroke early in the second half to keep the score tied at 2.  19 saves in a game ranks fourth in the College's single-game record book.  Booth meanwhile had three saves for Hamilton.

Utica (4-4) will look to rebound Saturday as it travels to SUNY Cortland.  Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
