Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

McCarthy's Double OT Winner Lifts UC Past ACPHS

Utica, NY – Freshman Colin McCarthy (Vestal, NY/Vestal) headed home the game-winner in double overtime to help lift the Utica College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against visiting Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences on Tuesday night at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.  Nicolas Diaz (Commack, NY/Commack) delivered the free kick into the box which was headed past Panther goalie Nathan Martens by McCarthy to hand the Pioneers the victory with just 5:20 left in double overtime.

The Pioneers snapped a two-game slide and improved to 3-5-1 overall on the year. UC returns to action on the road Saturday when it travels to Empire 8 Conference rival Nazareth College (1 p.m.).

Sophomore goalie Randy Miksch (Lake Villa, IL/Warren Township) needed just one save to earn his first collegiate shut out in his first start in the blue and orange.

Utica outshot the visitors 26-2 on the day and undoubtedly took control in the second half, out shooting the Panthers 20-1 over the course of the final 60:20 of action. The Pioneers also earned a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Alex Purcell (Lansing, NY/Lansing) nearly put the game away midway through the first overtime when his header in front of the net ricocheted off the post and the game remained scoreless at 0-0.

Julian Fonseca (Rocky Hill, CT/Bridgton) led the Pioneers with eight shots on the afternoon, while Patrick Hynes (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem) added four shots of his own.

ACPHS goalie Nathan Martens kept the Panthers in the contest as he stopped nine shots on the evening. The Panthers record moved to 3-3 overall after Tuesday's loss.
