Alfred Tops UC in Empire 8 Play

Alfred, NY – The Utica College women's basketball team lost to host Alfred University 71-57 in Empire 8 Conference action on Friday night. Utica's Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) continued her red hot freshman campaign as she posted 20 points and added 18 rebounds, recording her ninth double-double of the season, to pace the Pioneers. 

UC's record evened at 6-6 overall and 1-2 in E8 play. Alfred's record moved to 5-6 overall on the season. The Pioneers finish the E8 weekend set on the road at Houghton College on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) capped the night with 14 points for the Pioneers, while Brigid Johndrow (Bristol, CT/St. Paul Catholic) added 10 points and eight rebounds. Kimberly Soriano (Queens, NY/Monsignor McClancey Memorial) provided a nice spark off the bench for UC as she went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and totaled seven points. 

Utica jumped out to a 20-11 lead in the first 8:35 of the contest after a made jumper by Conkin with 1:25 to go in the first quarter. Alfred answered with a 13-8 run of its own in a span of 8:57 of the second quarter to make it a 30-28 game in favor of the Pioneers at the half. 

The Saxons continued their successful run in the second half and outscored UC 17-11 in a span of 9:00 in the third quarter to take a 48-41 advantage headed into the final quarter of the contest. 

A strong fourth quarter sealed the victory for the Saxons as they outscored UC 20-16 in an 8:40 stretch to earn the 71-57 conference victory. 

Four players scored in double figures for the home team.  Lyndsey McCoy and Jamie Wilcox each posted 18 points for the Saxons.  Bri Hicks added 13 points and five rebounds, while Amanda Figueroa came off the bench and totaled 11 points and seven rebounds.
