Strong Second Half Guides Fisher Past Utica

Utica, NY – The Utica College women's basketball team led St. John Fisher College 35-27 at the half, but the visiting Cardinals outscored the Pioneers 25-14 in the third quarter on its way to a 72-62 victory in Empire 8 Conference action on Friday night on Doris Wester & Walter Miga Court at the Clark Athletic Center.

Utica's losing streak moved to five games as its overall record fell the 6-9 on the season.  The Pioneers are also 1-5 in E8 play. Fisher has now won two in a row and improved to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in Empire 8 play.

Four players scored in double-figures for the Pioneers, including junior Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) who posted 16 points and added seven assists, while shooting 4-for-7 from beyond the arc.  Briannah Florian (Fort Plain, NY/Fort Plain) returned from injury and scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor.  Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) added 12 points and six rebounds, while Kimberly Soriano (Queens, NY/Monsignor McClancey Memorial) earned the start for UC and netted 10 points to go along with four assists.

Fisher's Erin Hulbert led the Cardinals with 13 points and seven rebounds.  Ella Ecker added 12 points and eight boards, while Sydney Masna came off the bench and posted 11 points, four rebounds and three steals.

The Pioneers held the Cardinals to 10-for-26 shooting from the floor in the first half to build its eight point lead, 35-27, as the halftime horn sounded.  The Pioneers were 14-for-25 from the floor and 5-for-9 from 3-point land in the first 20 minutes as they headed into the locker room at the half with a quality advantage over the visitors.

Fisher shot over 50% from the floor in the second half (14-for-27) and converted on 12-of-14 free-throws in the final 20 minutes to earn the conference victory.  The Cardinals also caused 23 UC turnovers, which resulted in 20 points as they ran away with the road victory.

UC returns to the hardwood on Saturday when the Pioneers host Elmira College for Empire 8 action at 12 p.m.
