Hartwick Pulls Away in Fourth Quarter to Top Utica

UTICA, NY – The Utica College women's basketball team rallied from a 15-point third quarter deficit and cut Hartwick's lead to just six points, 65-59, by the end of the third but the Hawks stood strong and earned an 89-77 victory in Empire 8 Conference action on Tuesday night.

Utica point guard Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) registered a career-high 17 assists, while sophomore Kimberly Soriano (Queens, NY/Monsignor McClancey Memorial) drilled five 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 17 points in the loss.  Four Pioneers scored in double-figures including Soriano, Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) (16), Briannah Florian (Fort Plain, NY/Fort Plain) (15) and Brigid Johndrow (Bristol, CT/St. Paul Catholic) (12).

UC has dropped six in a row and saw its record fall to 6-10 overall on the season. Hartwick has won seven straight, improved to 14-3 overall, and sits atop the league standings with a 7-1 ledger in E8 play.

Caitlin Corbett netted a career-high 34 points on a staggering 13-of-16 shooting from the floor to help the Hawks earn their best start to a season since 2014. Carly Johnson had a big night for the Hawks as well as she poured in 25 points.

Utica trailed by just eight points, 40-32, at the half and outscored the visitors 27-25 in the third quarter to make it a six-point ball game through 30 minutes of action. Hartwick pulled away by outscoring the Pioneers 24-18 in the final ten minutes of action.

Utica looks to get back on track this weekend when they host Stevens on Friday (5:30 p.m.) and Nazareth on Saturday (2 p.m.) as the Pioneers wrap up a four game home stand.
